Shy Shadow was established in 2007 as a multidisciplinary studio by New York-based designer Akira Yoshimura, a native of Yokohama, Japan. Having developed a keen interest in both Eastern and Western design and material culture, Akira chose to pursue his design education in the United States, where he received a BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design. He has since given design lectures there, as well as being a guest critic at both RISD and Parsons School of Design in New York.

Shy Shadow strives to create a wide range of products that create unexpected experiences in the realm of daily life. By designing uncommon solutions to common problems, the studio aims to promote conversation and interaction between people and the objects they use. Shy Shadow hopes to create products that can act as characters in the lives of the people who use them.
