East London design show 2011
Posted on December 15, 2011 by Toothpicker
I was meant to write about the East London design show right after it ended but I caught a bad flu which disrupted all my work schedules. I almost thought I had to pull out of the show because I was so poorly! I missed half of Friday but luckily, other designers [...]

Exhibitions in Tokyo & Hong Kong (Nov 2011)

While I was in Tokyo, I went to a few exhibitions including: Irving Penn and Issey Miyake's Visual Dialogue at 21_21 Design Sight in Midtown, Metabolism: the city of the future at Mori Art Museum in Roppongi Hills and Japan's long selling products at Printing Museum in Koishikawa.
Irving Penn and Issey Miyake's [...]

Letterpress business cards
Posted on December 11, 2011 by Toothpicker
It was quite a challenge to find a letterpress printer that could deliver within a short time frame and not be charged an arm and a leg! After contacting many printers both within the UK and outside, I eventually went for 'Glasgow Press'.
The card used is Colorplan pristine white 540 gsm, edge [...]

Yuruliku's Tokyo studio visit
Posted on November 23, 2011 by Toothpicker
While I was in Tokyo, I was glad to be invited to our Tokyo designer, Yuruliku's studio in Ochanomizu, an area which I have never visited before. There are many university campuses and musical instruments stores here (which I later discovered when my friend and I got very lost).
Foolishly, I left the [...]

Good design award exhibition 2011
Posted on November 22, 2011 by Toothpicker
In Tokyo Midtown, I visited the Good design award exhibition 2011 exhibited this year's award-winning Japanese designs. My favourite was DoCoMo's ad for their Touchwood mobile phone, Xylophone of the Forest (click on the link to watch the amazing film). The campaign was cancelled because it launched on the day the tsunami [...]

Tokyo designers week/ Designtide 2011
Posted on November 20, 2011 by Toothpicker
I didn't really expect to encounter obstacles when I planned my trip to Asia, but I guess life is full of unexpected surprises... First, I had to cancel my Bangkok trip 2 hours before my flight departure due to the floods; then I was warned about the high radiation scare in Tokyo [...]

Hong Kong: beyond the high rise
Posted on October 29, 2011 by Toothpicker
Like many, I never fully appreciated what Hong Kong has to offer (besides shopping and dining) until recent years. Now I finally know what I have missed out on for all those years!
When I contacted my new friend whom I met on a hike last year, we decided to try out Sai [...]

Hello Hong Kong
Posted on October 23, 2011 by Toothpicker
My original trip to Asia involved 2 weeks in Hong Kong (staying with family and catching up with friends), a few days in Bangkok visiting the BIF+BIH trade fair, followed by a week in Tokyo for the Tokyo design week.
Sadly, I had to postpone my trip to Bangkok because of the floods [...]

Prufrock coffee
Posted on October 17, 2011 by Toothpicker
I am not embarrassed to admit that I am a coffee addict! I love the aroma, taste, colour and most of all, the experience... In the last few years, there are many new independent coffee shops opening in London and Prufrock coffee is my latest discovery.
Located on Leather Lane, I only found [...]

London design festival 2011
Posted on September 27, 2011 by Toothpicker
Another year, another design festival... I have attended this for several years now and it's interesting to see how it has evolved. Usually, the media only focuses on the London fashion week (which happens around the same time), but there seems to be a bit more coverage on the design festival this [...]
