Sashiko weaving is a traditional technique famous in the Tohoku region of Japan. Since 2013, Japanese illustrator Toshiyuki Fukuda has been collaborating with sashiko weave artisan Kenichi Ohazama from Miwa Orimono in Fukushima to create a range of contemporary textile products.
The beautiful fabric is characterised by its geometrical patterns and the texture created on the woven surface. The abstract patterns of flora and fauna bring a new dimension to this traditional technique. Due to the weaving technique, a large piece of textile is first produced and then cut into smaller sizes. Hence, each piece in this collection is unique, with no two products alike.
