Kakishibu is a traditional Japanese natural dyeing method that uses fermented persimmon juice as the dye. The tannin produced from the fermentation process coats and dyes the fabric, and the colour deepens as it is exposed to the sun, hence this process is also referred to as 'sun dyeing'. The tannin dye has excellent antiseptic, waterproofing, and mothproofing properties, and has been used as a folk medicine for centuries due to its antibacterial properties.

These patchwork linen coasters are stitched together randomly, hence each one is different and unique. On the front side, it features persimmon-dyed patches, and on the back, it features indigo-dyed and persimmon-dyed with iron mordant (brown) patches. All the fabrics are naturally dyed by hand.
